Take it to the stage with local poets at Sandrini’s on the first Tuesday of every month!

It’s about 10 p.m. on a Tuesday night.

You can see them coming down the stairs a few at a time - notebooks in hand, already going over in their heads what they plan to perform.

Hugs and handshakes all around. Grab a drink, grab a table, open the notebook and check to make sure its contents are legible in the dim light of Sandrini’s Bar downtown.

Sidney is setting up on the stage. Lacey is passing the sign-up sheet around. it’s time, again, for Spoken Word Night hosted once a month by Refresh Rhyme Scheme at the local watering hole. A few drinks, some amazing poetry and a lot of really great people sharing their words with the crowd make for a fantastic night out.

The group has definitely grown in the months since it first started meeting with new faces and a bigger crowd. More people are talking about it each month, and I’m seeing individual performers grow more confident in their delivery - and bolder in their choice of topics.

Getting involved has also wrought changes in me. I’m getting a lot more comfortable on the stage. I was having trouble at first. Performing poetry onstage, I’ve learned, is not the same as acting onstage at all. It feels like a whole different game. I’m also getting better at dealing with the microphone. In addition to this, seeing other members of the group deliver from memory has really impressed me and I’m encouraged to work toward doing so myself. Hopefully, this will happen in January!

The sign-up sheet will be passed around as usual, and spoken-word artists will take the stage starting at 9 or 10 p.m.

So - step up to the microphone and take a deep breath. Feel the rush in your stomach and the lights on your face as you look out at all the people who are looking back at you. Get into character. Get into the moment. Get lost in the spoken words.
