The Natural Movement
Artistry is the number one priority for local rap purists

By DJ Mikey, Bakotopia.com contributor
What do you get when you combine art, jazz, hip-hop and a self-described “nerdy guy?”
You get The Natural Movement - fresh rhyme and beat makers, poised to get Bakersfield prominently placed on the hip-hop map.
In 2003, members Nerd Guy and DJ Qwiz got together making beats and putting down rhymes at each other’s houses. Adding Garvey and Qwiz’s friend Art the Influence in 2004, The Natural Movement was born.
Even though the culture has been ‘pop-ularized’ in the media, many people get confused with the word hip-hop and what it’s all about. Many view the culture as what you hear on the radio, coming from artists like 50 Cent to Little John making derogatory comments about women and focusing solely on money.
But if you are a follower of underground/independent hip-hop music, you’ll find it’s more of a lifestyle, full of poetics and with topics dealing with real-life, everyday struggles. That’s how the name Natural Movement came about. And while many rappers on the scene have fallen victim to negative stereotypes, resulting in limited shows, Nerd makes sure his group avoids such problems.

(L to R: Garvey, The Nerd Guy, DJ Qwiz, and Lekshure, at 'The Movement' 11/30)
“The Natty Movement has something everybody can enjoy and relate to,” he said during a recent performance at ‘The Movement’ urban art show at The Dome on Nov. 30. “We rap about everyday living, working, capitalism, and how it affects us.”
Hype man Garvey is soon to jump in…
“I can remember a time when I had three jobs,” said Garvey. “That’s what makes us different.”
Some of Natural Movement’s recent shows include opening for 2 Mex of the Visionaries, Wu-Tang associate Killah Priest, Casual, Afro-Man, and performances at various hip-hop events.
According to group members, The Natural Movement has no boundaries.
With an almost nonexistent hip-hop scene and lack of supporters in Bakersfield, up and comers like the Natty Movement struggle to be heard. But group members Nerd, hype man Garvey, along with the soulful beats of DJs/producers Qwiz and Art the Influence, are prepared to rise to the occasion.
“We will never change for mainstream or any label,” explained Garvey. “We want people to listen, and take us as we are. Our goal is to take it as high as we can go, but be known as artists - first and foremost.”
When you see and hear The Natural Movement live or on CD, you’ll know what hip-hop in Bakersfield is all about. Catch them live!
