With the new year comes a new listing of the best in local books.  Twice a year Russo's Books, Bakersfield's only locally-owned general bookseller, adds up the sales of books by local authors and/or of local interest from the past six months and presents them as "Bakersfield Bestsellers".

At the "head" of the class is none other than Brian "Head" Welch.  The former Korn guitarist's spiritual autobiography "Save Me From Myself" easily outdistanced the competition to land number one on our current list.

Two former number ones occupy the second and third slots on Russo's Bakersfield Bestseller's list:  "Angel Girl", the inspirational true story of a young girl stricken with a deadly disease, by Father Craig Harrison and "Friday Night Heroes", the history of BHS Driller football's first 100 years, by Rick Van Horne.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Among Friends II", a collection of daily devotionals written by Cynthia Giumarra and the Canyon Hills Women's Ministry, and "Sound of War", a revolutionary war novel written by local teenagers Sarah Haymond & Bretley Roche.

The remaining list includes:

#6-T "Introduction to Thoughts and Customs of Native Americans" by Jim Phillips,

#8 "Bakersfield Pastoral" by Chris Brewer,

#9-T Dear Cora by Camille Gavin,

#11 "Saga of Rancho el Tejon" by Frank F. Latta,

#12-T "Silence and the Sun" by Joe de Kehoe,

#12-T "Bakersfield & Kern Picture Album" by Chris Brewer and Don Pipkin,

#14 "Haslam's Valley" by Gerald Haslam,

#15-T "Memory's Frosted Pane" by Larry Etue, and

#15-T the former #1 children's biography on Buck Owens which was written as a fundraiser for the BCSD Educational Foundation, "Freight Train Running" by Linda Stacey.
