The Politics of Voting
A devout young Republican explains her disdain for Democrats and too much government
By AnnieLWhite, Bakotopia.com contributor
I registered to vote when I turned 18 in February of 2001 and have voted three times since.
Politics have always been a huge part of my life - it runs our lives even if we refused to get involved or even vote. Politics has the power to change the world - for bad and good, even when you die. Oh yeah, ever heard of the death tax?
Allow me to explain the two biggest issues I have with our government:
My No. 1 issue has always been taxes - the less taxes, the better.
I’ve always liked the idea of “the more you work the more you get,” but because of some politicians it’s more like “the more you earn the more they take” - “they” being the government.
It always irritates me that politicians who make more each month than I do in a year tell me that I have to pay for all kinds of meaningless crap. The rich politicians complain about the rich citizens and corporations and how evil they are because they have money. But think about it - who hires people? Not poor corporations, they can’t afford to!
Come election time, I try to learn about the personal and political lives of those running for office before I vote. I tend to find most politicians hypocritical and all of them lie to a certain degree.
My No. 2 issue is too much government in our personal lives.
There is nothing I hate more than someone telling me how to live my life in a “free” country - especially someone who has no idea who I am.
Of course, there needs to be order. Without order comes chaos. Laws are important, but laws are becoming too restrictive (i.e.: gun control, political correctness). We have the Constitution and Bill of Rights written by some very smart men to bring balance to those in power.
Anyone who wants to be president needs to be followed very closely. Anyone who wants that much power is not a character that I’m comfortable putting my trust in.
Let’s see… who comes to mind?
A moody woman, a man with “great” hair, a man for change (who doesn’t really specify what he wants changed unless it’s uniting me with universal health care - yuck!). There’s also a man with a lisp (which gets on my nerves), and a man who wants to be cut off from the whole world ( and he has the most yard signs I have ever seen).
To tell you the truth, I’m not sure who I’m voting for, but rest assured it’s going to be someone on the republican ticket.
Happy voting day Bakotopians!

Annie, you would really like the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi. I was totally blown away by all the stuff I had forgotten. You are young enough to perhaps have not known it, but regardless we all should remember Ronnie. A great American.
