Magical mystical Guinness!

By Chase, Bakotopia staff

St. Patrick’s Day: A day when we can forget all of our differences and romp about in drunken festivity.

It is only fitting that we pay tribute to what is still an unofficial holiday in the United States and its Lady of the Hour: Beer. Saint Patrick’s Day lends us another excuse (alongside Super Bowl Sunday, the Fourth of July, Cinco de Mayo, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor Day, Arbor Day, Saturday) to indulge in a frothy brew and celebrate the Irish stereotype of excessive drinking.

What better way to pay tribute than by taking a look at some of the potential benefits - beside making you realize just how much you love all of your friends (and you’re not just saying that!) - of taking in some legendary Guinness stout?

Why Guinness? Well, according to various “suspicious” Internet resources…

The proposed health benefits of drinking a stout versus a lager are one of the most important distinctions to make. So far it seems true that drinking dark beers may actually have heart-healthy benefits, specifically in reducing blood clots that can lead to bad, bad things. It is the same idea that is behind the health benefits of drinking red wine versus white wine, and similarly, red grape juice versus white.

And with Saint Patrick’s Day rapidly approaching, why not pay homage to Guinness, one of the native children of the Emerald Isle’s fertile womb?

It may not end there, however. For the man with a penchant for epidermal salubrity, there are also suggestions that bathing in a tub of the amber concoction offers benefits for your skin. Although I take the view that a nice facial scrub would be a lot less strenuous on your budget, if you can afford to dunk your naked body into a tub full of brewed hops and grains, go for the gusto!

Of course, binge drinking damages your body. And at this point in time, the studies are still being conducted to determine exactly what may be contributing to what is still only considered a potential benefit of the beer (when consumed no more than twice a day).  So far though, it appears that enjoying one to two of these Irish gifts a day may do you some good.

So break out some stout and (for the sake of those who have to answer your gushing phone calls at 3 in the morning) enjoy in moderation.

Guinness Draught: 4.1% abv, 210 calories per pint.
Guinness Extra Stout: 5% abv, 170 calories per pint.
