My favorite current jazz artist is organist Robert Walter of Super Heavy Organ, Greyboy Allstars, 20th Congress, Steve Kimock Band & Stanton Moore fame. If you ever wanted to see Travis Bickler (Deniro's character from Taxi Driver) playing fat organ leads, look no further...his 'you talkin to me' face is priceless.
edit: Norah Jones? Really? Check out her superhero sideproject El Madmo...she portrays a punk rock guitarist/singer...punk rock in the sense of late 70s police-ish type punk, not Total Chaos. Just got my preordered CD in the mail today, but I believe it hits shelves on May 20th...That girl's not jazz...she plays a piano, hangs w/ cool cats, but is a singer/songwriter through and through...it's been grouped country, it's been grouped jazz, it's been grouped pop, but it's always been singer/songwriter. Check out El Madmo for a good chuckle.

My favorite jazz artist is Dave Brubeck if you listen to "Take Five" it answers it all. Dave has captured, to me,the sound of the city in about 5.5 minutes.
I also like Norah Jones, who could be considered Jazz, I could listen to her soft voice all day.

A group I've recently found is called Loe and The Nastys. They are young, fresh, and funky - but not elephunky! I first heard their music when I was looking at an amazing artist's work online http://philinthecircle.com/ One of their songs narrates the work "A Moment" You can find them on myspace at www.myspace.com/loesmusic :)

My favorite jazz artist of all time is without a doubt Miles Davis. He has been able to transcend the many styles of jazz, while pioneering a couple on his own. One of my favorite Miles tunes is "Honky Tonk". Check it out sometime.

I love The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Starting listening to New Orleans Style Jazz, while on a trip to the sweet sixteen in New Orleans when I was 16. I fell in love with the sounds of Bourbon St. I picked up The Dirty Dozen 'cause the album said sounds of Mardi Gras. Enjoyed it for years then, some 10 years later, I got to see them live in Long Beach at the Blue Cafe...Most excellent show...could really feel the music...throughout your dancing soul!!
2nd favorite is Taj Mahal....last seen at Detroit Jazz Festival 2006...The Fireworks are intense!!!

The best jazz ever for me was a group in Miami back in 2004 called Tobacco Road, it was a dive bar in the jewelery district that I accidentally found. 15 jagerbombs later I was their biggest fan. That time Matt sang 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On' was pretty sexy too.

My favorite? Hmmm, that is a toughie, 'cause I like so many. BUT...Jeremy Pelt - trumpeter - is one of them. Listen to his "Scorpio' and tell me this isn't the hottest thing since Miles did "Spanish Key" - it's just outstanding!
Lots of free, live mp3 versions of it (and other tunes) at his website: http://www.peltjazz.com/mp3...
Here's one of the better versions: http://monsterisland.alkem....

There are some great names already mentioned in the comments above - I'm a big fan of Dave Brubeck and the Dirty Dozen, as well as Al (too many notes) Di Meola and Thelonius Monk. Still, I think one of my all time favorites is the Paul Cierly group from the CSUB Jazz program's CD Twirl - from the opening sax riff on "Deely Bops" to the building funk vibe of "Not Necessarily" they're a great example of what Doug Davis has done to nurture and inspire some amazing music!

It is so hard to pick just one, especially with the different styles and era's of Jazz. I love it all, I guess I would go with Quincy Jones, because that is who just came to mind right now :)

For years I have wanted to attend the CSUB Jazz Festival. I am a newbie to most jazz, but really like Nora Jones. I would love to have a day to relax with a good friend, some good weather and some good music. Wouldn't you like to make my wish come true?? Thanks!

Joe Pass. As a guitarist, I got the privilege to listen to him for the first time on a Hi Fi Phono. Blew me away. His tones and melodies opened up my world in a way few other guitarists have.
...and ditto on your edit Meestro

It comes down to either Michael Brecker(R.I.P.) or Pat Metheny. If I had to choose I guess I would say Pat is my favorite jazz artist. His solos and writing are just so magical to me. It doesn't even matter what style he's playing either you can still tell that it's the same old Pat we know and love.

I don't have a particular person or group I like because I like them all. It would be great to win tickets because I've never been to the CSUB Jazz Festival, however, my sister went about 10 years ago and loved it.

My family and I love the jazz. Brubeck is amazingly talented, though his composing outshines his live stuff. The 'rents would dig a night out at the festival - almost as much I'd like them to get out of our house :)
