Rock Camp For Girls
Attention rrriot gals, Stockdale Music offers a chance to attend a real School of Rock: June 16 - 20, 2008!

Bakersfield during the summer is a constant struggle for most kids. Scheming a way out of the inferno that is Kern County, calling aunts and uncles on the coast to mooch a weekend in the water, anything to escape the heat. Cabin fever runs high during the summer months and there must be salvation, something to forget the unholy sensation of burning your belly with a sizzling seat belt buckle.
Music takes a back seat during summer. Once school is out, the next time a student picks his or her violin, trombone, or mallets will be in three months. Music becomes limited, almost non-existent. If you're lucky you can con your mom into giving you a ride to the Rockin’ Roots Fest, The Gate, Jerry’s Pizza, Studio 99, Golden State Mall, or The Dome to see a show, but that's once a week!
The pain of summer is magnified for the musician, more specifically, young female musicians. Girls with guitars lock themselves in their rooms, watch YouTube shredding tutorials, and compose masterpieces for their dream band.
Girls with drums melt in the heat of their parent's garage, fans blasting from all angles, thrashing as fast as they can till they fall over spent. Lady bassists play along to their favorite songs, improvise over mundane pop and try hard to keep up with latest recording of Tal Wilkenfeld. From personal experience I know the lonely hours a lady musician spends with her instruments, and that's unacceptable.
Bakersfield spawns raw music talent. Students compete for top ranking chairs in the state honor band, our garage bands go on to tour the world, and local cover bands keep crowds entertained for hours. It's apparent the summertime blues is the fault of the community: the ability is there, but the location is lacking.
In attempts to rectify this serious problem, Stockdale Music has dedicated the summer to a series of camps and clinics. Starting June 16, Stockdale Music will host the city's first ever Rock Camp For Girls. Campers between the ages of 8 and 18 will form bands, learn basic music theory, technique, compose an original song, get a crash course in the history of women who rock, create D.I.Y. merchandise, and promote their band!
Along with the hours of instruction and practice the campers will enjoy performances and Q&A sessions with local bands: Vogue in the Movement, Grizzly Owls, Seed, YML Orchestra, and more. The Saturday night after camp, bands will perform for friends, family, and screaming fans.
Why not gather up your girlfriends and make a band? There are plenty of boys doing the same thing, landing local shows, and spending their summers doing something constructive. I say it's time for girls to step out of their brother's shadows and start a riot!
