On July 12^th The Empty Space Theatre will host a “mini-comic-con” as part of the opening celebration for COMICS! an art show that salutes the art of the comics genre.  

Taking place just two weeks before San Diego’s legendary 4 day event our 3 hour baby con will provide some favorite features of the real deal: Comic book dealers, art for sale, live art demonstrations from an industry professional, classic cartoons and, my favorite part, the costume contest (aka Masquerade). 

Our costume contest will feature a line-up of judges headed by Bakersfield’s own Superhero, Ty'Veculus a.k.a. local firefighter, Quincy Sloan, who first appeared on Stan Lee’s SciFi channel show, “Who Wants to be a Superhero”.   If you are a costumer who wants to show off your style or just want to take your costumes for a test run before San Diego here is what you need to know:

There is NO ENTRY FEE for costuming entries. Entries must be the original work of the costumer entered in the show. Costumers MUST provide their own models. The entries can either pay homage to an existing character (or characters) or can be a brand new character created for the show. The entries can be any comic book genre...as long as the character has or would appear in a comic book and would be rated PG-13 or less it is acceptable.

Group and individual entries are encouraged.

Please provide a 30 second to 1 minute narrative for the MC to read to capture the audience's imagination while the models walk the runway.

Prizes (Gift Certificates from local businesses) will be awarded in the following categories (following ComicCon categories--so, if you could also enter the ComicCon masquerade (theirs is Saturday, July 26 and the entry deadline is July 9th):

• Best In Show
• Best Re-Creation
• Best Original Design
• Best Workmanship
• Most Humorous
• Most Beautiful

The “mini-comic-con” will take place July 12^th from 4-7pm at the Empty Space Theatre, 706 Oak Street, Bakersfield (at the back of the Pizzaville USA parking lot).  The costume contest will begin at 5pm.  Free Food—Art--Artists—Live Art Demonstrations—Comic book dealers—door prizes—classic cartoons!  Don’t miss this event! The COMICS! art show will be open for viewing July 12-26 at The Empty Space Theatre in tandem with Enrique Acosta’s new play, Godmakers.
