Weekly Open Mic Beckons Poets of Bako

If you have not yet heard about Refresh Rhyme Scheme, allow us to be the first to make the introduction.

We are an open mic spoken word night featured every first Tuesday of the month at Sandrini’s, 1918 Eye St.

We know what you must be thinking: spoken word? That’s correct. Your eyes did not deceive you. Since May ‘07 we have been hosting an open forum for artists to get on their soap box in poetic form. In an adult setting, artists are given the freedom to speak anything and everything on their minds.

No censorship and no cover charge. We welcome anyone with a pen, paper and a poetic soul. We also feature prominent local artists as guest MCs every month, recently including Jen Raven and Ginn Williams (both recently featured in Bakotopia).



This month we are proud to welcome Aaron Ashe to our stage.

Aaron is a local artist, educator and athlete with strong political opinions and a desire to voice them unapologetically. Jen Raven is an unbound support to the entire arts community and has curated “Burn the Witch” at the Empty Space gallery for the past several years and will return this year on Oct. 11.

We appreciate everyone who has stepped up to support poets putting their hearts on stage. There are few things more terrifying than telling a room of people what’s in your head. A person is never more naked than when speaking their mind. In the past year we have laughed, felt connected, alienated, shocked, and have been sorrowful.

We have felt joy, triumph, elation, excitement and anger. We have felt more human. We owe that to the poets who come out every first Tuesday and share their world with us, asking nothing in return. It continues to be the most amazing gift.

We thank you.
