The Epitome of Sound:
Music Reviews by DJ Moustache

I’d like to show how actors and comedians can paint a picture through words and song with some of my current favorites.
She & Him
“Volume One”
Merge Records 2008
She & Him is the musical project of actress Zooey Deschanel and singer/songwriter M. Ward.
Not a bad album at all for a Hollywood star, but that might be due to the inclusion of Ward, a longtime veteran in the indie world. Vocally, Deschanel surprises me. I never would have thought she would have such a great deep crooning voice!
The album seems overpowered by a Nashville country sound, mixed with a pinch ’60s girl group to make it just quirky enough to like on first listen. Some songs on the album may require a few listens before your ears warm up to it, like the cover of Smokey Robinsons “You really got a hold on me” and The Beatles “Should’ve Known Better.”
In my opinion, the original songs are good and the horrible covers should’ve have been left off the album. M. Ward fans be warned - he doesn’t sing much, it’s pretty much Deschanel handling the vocals.
But if you’re a Zooey fan this is a must!
Flight of the Conchords
“Flight of the Conchords”
Sub Pop 2008
New Zealand cult comedians Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement debut as Flight of the Conchords on the U.S. charts.
I’ve watched Flight of the Conchords many times on YouTube and I’m always laughing pretty hard! With as many songs as they do on their shows, it was only a matter of time before they amassed an album’s worth - and an album worth putting out. Classic staples like “Ladies Of The World” and “The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room),” and their hilarious attempt at sounding like David Bowie on the track rightly titled “Bowie” is perfect for entertaining or serious listening.
To give you an idea, the music jumps around from pop, rock, folk, soul, disco and more. My favorite lyric on the album is “Oh you sexy hermaphrodite lady-man ladies / with your sexy lady bits and your sexy man bits too / even you must be in to you.”
If the show and musical duo Flight of the Conchords are unknown to you, quit depriving yourself of some comedic genius and check it out on HBO, YouTube, DVD, and get this album! Outselling Ashlee Simpson’s new album in the same week of its initial release makes the album even funnier than it already is!
