The Local Heart of Art 2
Profiling more of the new Bako art scene

The first time around, we wanted to showcase some local talent. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to fit in everyone so we had to do it again. With the Kern Arts Council, and many independent submissions, we were able to pull together another collection of local pieces with great ease.

For the cover we wanted to do something different, so we decided to go with a medium that has been gaining considerable respect over the years. We contacted local gamer artist Niki Burgy about whipping up something for the cover, which she pulled off in a very small time crunch. I’m keeping this short — enjoy!

Nano Rubio started like most do with conventional drawings. But during high school, he began to get into graphic designing, which ultimately led to gaining his associate of the arts degree in computer graphics from BakersfieldCollege. Transferring to Cal State Bakersfield, Nano received his bachelor’s degree in studio painting. These two seemingly unrelated degrees have influenced some of his work that incorporates both painting and graphics.

While he aims to land a master of the fine arts degree, he is in no hurry, because creating and using art is something that will never die out in his life. The desire to create art is not motivated by financial gain, but by a need to feel sane, and many artists can relate to that feeling.

And now, here are some of the other talents that Bakersfield has to offer!
Jesus Fidel

Byron Rhodes

Darla Lovett

Marisela Oropeza
