As an observer and thinker, I have come to realize that a lot of what I observe and think means not much of anything at all. Knowledge of what is or what isn't, what does and what doesn't, the whys, the wheres, the whos, etc. None of that really means anything. Anything at all. Until this knowledge is used for personal gain.
We are cannibals.
As a musician, this means that my life directly affects my art. All of which I know is useless until I can turn it into something tangible, something that can provide spiritual fulfillment or economic success (in this case it's sound).
In the professional fields there are the cutthroat businessmen who in the quest for the bottom line, do not hesitate to use the work of those below them to propel themselves upward. There's nothing wrong with it, that's the way to success.
The executive at Coca-Cola corporation uses the market research given to him by the division he oversees to recommend going through with the formulation marketing of a new drink. If it goes well this executive gets a gigantic pat on the back, a promotion, and maybe a secretary under the table. If his recommendation fails, however, then the only Coca-Cola this person will be seeing from then on is when he's at a vending machine (or a fast-food restaurant.... or a supermarket... or tv...I'll stop there).
We are cannibals.
We eat our own. It's not a bad thing, it is in itself an evolution of Darwin. A modern first-world human society where the weak are not those individuals who cannot fend for themselves (the elderly, the lame, the diseased), but those individuals who cannot find a way to tap their resources for upward mobility.
The hip word being tossed around nowadays by the chic Starbucks philospher to describe what is discussed in this article is "post-modern".
But I think cannibalism is catchier.
