September 21st will be Kern County’s very first Pagan Pride Day festival, and while you might understand how it could be important to Pagans, it is also important to the community as a whole.

Such events, of course, allow for those whose religious beliefs fall into what many consider the “Neo-Pagan” system to meet, network, learn about businesses friendly to them, and learn new things about the Pagan community at large. It allows people of a like mind who are normally isolated to connect to others like them, to learn that they are not alone and there are others they can meet with, places they can go, legal protections for them, and resources beneficial to them in their very own community.

It is also important for non-Pagans, however, for it allows them access to a world that they more than likely do no know about. Being able to meet in a friendly atmosphere allows misconceptions to be dispelled, ignorance to be cleared away, fears to be laid aside, and tolerance to bloom. They can learn that they very well may have family members, coworkers, neighbors, or others who are of a Pagan faith, and that they have peacefully and happily coexisted with these other good hearted people all along. Understanding what is truly a part of Pagan faiths might also help these individuals accept and respect faiths other than their own, and ease their concerns over misconceptions they have held onto.

In this kind of an open and accepting event, our community can grow together, learn about each other, and be a happier place to live for all. I urge anyone who is Pagan, has Pagan leanings, or is curious about the Pagan religions to come to this special, first-time-in-the-county event. There will be special presentations, entertainment, and other activies as well as vendors, all sure to keep the mood bright and festive.

The Kern County Pagan Pride Day festival is being held at Stramler Park on Sunday, September 21st from 11 am to 5 pm, and is free for the public to attend. They ask that those attending bring a non-perishable food donation (which will be used locally.) More information can be found by visiting ww.kerncountypaganpride.org and www.myspace.com/kerncountypaganpride. The Kern County Pagan Pride is being organized and presented by a local group under the assistance of the Pagan Pride Day Project, a non-profit organization.
