You Can't Keep A Good R.A.T. Down!
The Prodigal peeps of putrid play return to The Empty Space in September!

By Matt Christensen, Bakotopia.com contributor

Attention comedy fans, the 2007 comedy season kicks off this September with what promises to be the most in your face experience you will encounter this year - the return of R.A.T.!

That irreverent team from Bakersfield, the Royal Association of Thespians (R.A.T.) presents “Taking Shots,” with a new team and a new playbook in their quest for the championship. Head coaches Fredrick Matthews and Dave Rock return for more raunch, depravity, and general lack of social consciousness that has been the bane of every opposing team and the stuff that makes the fans come back for more.

Coach Matthews has nothing but praise for the new team this season:

“The team effort has never been greater. While coach Rock and I may lead the team, it’s the players we have this season that make what we are doing here special. The collaboration of everyone together is what will take us all the way this time.”

With a very active off-season, coach Matthews has all the reason in the world to praise the new team.  Along with six returning starters, R.A.T. made some amazing acquisitions through free agency.  Joining the team this time are players from The Blacklist and Spotlight, one former R.A.T. player coming out of retirement, a rookie, and a former legend from All The Kings Players.  With 13 players this season, R.A.T. promises to leave all that come with a smile on their face and that oh-so-good feeling you get when you do something this wrong.

“Some of our detractors out there think that we have sold out these past few seasons,” says Coach Rock when asked about some of the team’s criticism that came during the pre-season.  “We’re here to show them that with the bigger roster this time around; the jokes will not be the same rehashes from our past playbooks. But the fans shouldn’t have anything to fear as we will be just as offensive, if not more so, then we ever have been before.”

In looking ahead to this season, no other team out there seems to have the same level of disrespect towards any and all types of people in the world, as does the Royal Association of Thespians. Some of the targets for this season, include the NAACP with what R.A.T. feels should have happened at that symbolic funeral back in July; individual caller ringtones on cell phones; Shark Week on the Discovery channel; and the socioeconomic condition of America today (which may be cut from the team because it is too funny, even for R.A.T.).  As always though will be the usual fallback plays with new takes on stereotyping, pop culture, and the world of advertising.  As coaches Fredrickson and Rock always say though, “The Royal Association of Thespians is an equal opportunity offender.”

This season of R.A.T. runs Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 7, 8,14 and 15,

Game time is 11 p.m. with the gate opening at 10:45 p.m.
