Local talent from BHS performs at Las Vegas and Long Beach Pride Festivals (LGBT)!
Andy Eubanks, a local BHS alumni, has been working hard the last 4 years at a career as a performer. He has just returned from a 13 month engagement in Japan working for Universal Studios as a singer- dancer and has worked with Royal Caribbean Cruises.
Coming from a major singing and dance background, Andy has had the opportunity to work and perform alongside many names and companies which could exceed the pages we have to write on! This month has been a big step for Andy in his career as an independent music artist. He has performed in Las Vegas (where over 12,000 people attended) and on May 17th will perform again in Long Beach for the Pride festivals for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community.
Andy is no stranger to being in the spotlight for being homosexual, but this time he hopes that it will help him to help others feel at ease with the LGBT community. In 2004 Andy and his friends started one of Kern County's first Gay-Straight Alliance at BHS, a club for any students who simply wished to empower and support gay and lesbian students and reduce if not demolish prejudice against those students who identified themselves as gay or lesbian (as well as bisexual and trans gendered).
Now Andy is using his identity and name to hopefully bring in fame and spread the message that gay does not mean abnormal or evil.
"Gay is simply something you are born into, not taught, and not seduced into. The only choice that we have is not whether or not we ARE gay, only whether or not we choose to identify as homosexual or bisexual," he said. "This doesn't change what our beliefs are nor who our family is but unfortunately for many it has questioned the beliefs some of us are taught and brought up with and torn families apart. It leaves many of us stranded in life to go into lifestyles that are unhealthy and risky, but for the lucky few of us who are supported through our lives, it gives us a sense of hope, pride, and responsibility to help those who are struggling and less fortunate. This doesn't just stand true for our own community, that's just a start, but the hardships we must face parallel many other injustices and prejudice found all over the world, in every community, in every household."
Andy hopes to use his fame and whatever fortune he claims as an artist to bring the normalcy of homosexuality to light, and encourage others to be a little more open minded and accepting of those who are homosexual. His music is not concentrated on any certain homosexual theme, it is music you would hear on the radio at any time on any popular station. It is fun, funky, pop music with themes all artists write about.
"Just because I AM gay does not mean that every song I write about has to be a gay theme," he explained. One song IS about drag queens but the point of it is reflected in the chorus! It states that no matter what other may say however negative it may be that we will just carry on being ourselves and having fun. It isn't hurting any one so keep doing what you do! Other songs range in themes as well but to be honest I write more so many love songs, THAT is my passion!"
