The Bakersfield Arts scene is growing.

Nyoka Jameson, president of Bakersfield Emerging Contemporary Arists (BECA) has this to say about Bakersifeld art: "So often I hear things like, 'there is no art scene in Bakersfield' and that is simply not true.

There are so many incredibly talented people, but they are spread out all over the place. We want to bring them together, and bring them to the people of Bakersfield."
As a way to assimilate the community  BECA and Metro Galleries have come together to make a community art project for local artists to show their skills thus “Opening Doors to the Arts.”

Nyoka describes the doors as, "very thick, heavy wooden doors. Don Martin of Metro Galleries, had saved them and came up with the idea for the project."

Each artist was given a door from a historical building in Bakersfield being renovated, like the Padre Hotel, to be made into a new piece of art. What was once useless will now be a beautiful masterpiece.

This challenge may call for bone saws, paintbrushes and maybe some glue. Nyoka said, "Don approached me with the idea for BECA to pick the artists."  Participating artist styles range from soft to detailed; Asian influence to caricature; skulls to peacocks.

The artists are veterans of such art exhibits as Villa Arté, 48 Hour Project, and Burn the Witch. Other artists of BECA who do not have a door of their own to create are making one together.

The fifteen finished doors will be displayed around the Bakersfield arts district on 19th & 20th streets in downtown and in the Wall Street alley for the community to see for free!!  All doors in this exhibit are for sale by silent auction starting at $300.  Portions of the proceeds will benefit local charities.

See you March 5th from 5-8pm in the Arts District during the First Friday artwalk!!

Look for the BECA collaborated Door!

I can't wait to see everyone's doors! Hope you will all join us for this special First Friday!!!
When I first heard about this it reminded me of a time I was prowling an old bookstore in San Francisco and came across a coffee table book of great doors of San francisco. Kind of like this web page. http://www.glasssteelandstone.com/Features/50DoorsSFO/50DoorsSFO.php This art project sounds like the cool old doors are just a launching point for some very pieces. I loves me some sculpture.
Great article, Alex! :D Can't wait to see the doors on display.
Thanks for the article. I'll be promoting this big time! Cheers, Matt
