"Artuary" will be a kick-off event to introduce our local arts scene to BECA (Bakersfield Emerging Contemporary Artists) on Feb. 7, at The Basement Gallery, 1532 19th St., starting at noon.

The Artuary event will be a full day of classes, networking and entertainment provided FREE of charge by the members of BECA and by The Basement.  All local visual artists are encouraged to participate.

Artuary, like BECA, is geared toward helping adult emerging artists. However, if mature teens are interested, and they have the permission of their parents, they are also welcome to attend the Artuary event.

The mission of BECA is to promote emerging visual artists in Bakersfield. By offering seminars, classes, group exhibitions and quarterly trips to contemporary galleries, we hope to both inspire the creation of art and advance the careers of local artists. BECA will serve as a stepping stone between the small-town art community within Bakersfield and the contemporary scene in California and beyond.

Artuary classes will include how-tos on framing, hanging hardware, putting together a portfolio, artist's statements, resumes, self promotions and much, much more. Networking opportunities will include information on upcoming events around town, where emerging artists can strut their stuff and get noticed!

Todd Powers (Foxglove Photography) will be offering a one-day special to Artuary participants who need professional photographs of their artwork.  If you'd like to get some killer photos of your art for your portfolio, bring your work with you to The Basement on February 7. Throughout the day, Todd will be working with artists: only $5.00 for up to five pieces of artwork and you get a disk of your final photos to take with you.

As if all of this weren't enough, an evening of entertainment is being planned to round out the event. We encourage all Artuary participants to stick around, enjoy the live entertainment and further network with their fellow artists.

Anyone interested in volunteering, donating, or contributing is encouraged to contact Jen Raven ... the more, the merrier!
