Bakersfield Rollergirls!

I am 35 and was born and raised in good ol' Bako. I've been sk8ting with the Bakersfield Rollergirls since May or June of 06. The Bakersfield Rollergirls are Bakersfield's one and only Roller Derby team. We come from all different walks of life. The team members range from stay-at-home moms, to school teachers, insurance agents, college students, small business owners, and so on. Almost anyone can be a part of derby. The only requirements are: a willingness to work your ass off, not being afraid to sweat like a pig, being "comfortable" having "helmet hair", be willing to knock the shit out of someone you may actually like, and taking a few bumps and bruises; sucking it up and shaking it off. Being part of the BRG's is one of the most challenging and rewarding things i've ever done. It's a wonderful feeling to be a part of something started with a simple idea and watching it grow. It's great when you can go out on the rink and knock each other around and then go have drinks afterwards and shoot the shit. There have been countless bruises and injuries and yet we all seem to keep coming right back for more.

We had our first real bout in Sacremento on St. Patrick's Day (March 17) against Sacramento and it was an amazing experience. Nerves were running wild on the day of the bout and for most, several days before it. Once we got out on the floor, adrenaline kicked in and we sk8ted our asses off. We may not have won but we definately gave them a run for their money and made them work for it. We came away from it with our first bout under our belts and the knowledge of what we needed to work on to bring home a victory for Bako at our next bout. I think we did an awesome job of showing everyone there that Bakersfield Rollergirls are a force to be reckoned with!

We are always recruiting new players and looking for people who would be interested in reff'ing, coaching, or helping out in any way. We are also in need of sponsors.
